BROADBAND MAKES LIFE EASIER FOR UK’S MUMS

Published: Sun Jun 19 2005

68% of UK Mums with older children believe that life is easier with broadband with fewer worries about the phone bill (62%), fewer family arguments about who’s using the phone line (61%) and the added attraction of saving time and money by shopping online (41%)! The results have been revealed in a survey by UK Online, a leading broadband Internet provider, which asked over 1,000 UK mums with kids aged 4-16 about their attitudes to Internet, and how it benefits them and their families.

The UK Online survey reveals the changing attitude to broadband amongst the nation’s mums, reflecting the enormous lifestyle and educational benefits of having fast Internet access at home. When asked to list the most important things to provide for their children at home, 51% of mums opted for broadband access, ahead of a TV (42%), a mobile phone (27%), games console (16%) or DVD player (15%). In a further sign of changing attitudes, 77% of UK mums said that when it comes to helping their children’s education, they would prefer to buy a broadband connection, rather than reference books such as the Encyclopedia Britannica.

With 76% of mums reporting that their 11-16 year-old kids regularly bring home schoolwork that requires them to use the Internet, it’s no surprise that broadband is now seen as one of the most important tools to provide in the home. Despite recent falls in the cost of broadband, however, 27% of mums still cite price as their main reason for not signing up. UK Online is working hard to overcome the cost barrier, with a new £9.99 per month unlimited broadband package*, bringing fast, always-on Internet access within the reach of more families than ever before.

Chris Stening, UK Online’s General Manager, commented, "I’m delighted that the UK’s mums are so switched on to the benefits of broadband, not only because it makes life easier, but also because of the huge benefits for their children’s education. With our new £9.99 unlimited broadband, we’re hoping to bring broadband within reach of even more families in Britain."
