Should You Stop Drinking Milk?

The second most-cited scientist in all of clinical medicine, Walther Willett, M.D., Ph.D., head of nutrition of Harvard's School of Public Health, flies in the face of 'up-to-date' advice from the United States Department of Agriculture, which recommends drinking three glasses of milk a day.

However, this advice, says Willett, is not centered on strict scientific evidence.
Vitamin D appears to be much more significant than calcium in preventing fractures. Contrary to common belief milk does not reduce fracture risk. In fact, according to the Nurses' Health Study dairy may increase risk of fracture by 50 percent.

Countries such as Africa and Asia, which have a low rate of dairy and calcium consumption, also have the lowest rates of osteoporosis.

Research has shown that higher intakes of either calcium or dairy products may promote a man's risk of prostrate cancer by 30 to 50 %. Large intake of dairy products increases the insulin-like growth factor, a known cancer promoter.

Through a problem known as lactose intolerance, almost 75 percent of the world's population is hereditarily unable to properly digest milk and other dairy products.

Apart from all that, it has been verified that milk does not seem to enhance sports' performance.

Dairy products are packed full of saturated fat and clearly associated with heart disease.

Dairy mammals (including human beings) stop producing the enzymes needed to properly metabolize and digest milk after they have been weaned. Research shows that our bodies are not designed to digest milk on a regular basis. The majority of scientists agree, it is better for us to get our calcium, potassium, protein and fats from other food sources, like whole plant foods, vegetables, fruits, beans, whole grains, nuts, seeds and seaweed.

Try doing away with all dairy foods such as milk, cheese, yoghurt and ice cream, from your diet for two weeks and see if you feel better. There may be a remarkable improvement in headaches and sinuses, irritable bowel syndrome, energy and weight. Then introduce dairy food again and notice if there is any difference.
