DATELINE: BRAINTREE, MA... For students working towards a Master’s degree in social work or Gerontology, South Shore Elder Services, a private, non-profit agency recently announced availability of a summer internship program in addition to their fall program. Based in Braintree, Mass., South Shore Elder Services provides seniors and caregivers in the South Shore area with valuable resources and services.

Catering to graduate students studying social work and Gerontology, South Shore Elder Services offers an internship program during the summer months in addition to their internship program held during the academic year. Interns serve in nutritional reassessment, protective services, family caregiver programs and area agency planning, depending upon their field of study. Past interns have included students from Umass, Bridgewater State, Wheelock and Boston College.

"We had three interns working with us from September to May and next year we hope to increase it to four or more interns during the academic year. Typically, the program or college determines whether an intern will work part or full time. Some colleges require a set schedule, while others are more flexible. We try to adapt schedules to student needs. The summer program, which runs from June to August, should work out well for interns who wish to gain experience before the new school year begins," explained Kara Fink, LICSW. Fink is the Coordinator of Clinical Development at South Shore Elder Services and oversees all interns.
