In R.J. Rahman's hometown of Seattle Washington within the neighborhood were she grew up an 8 year old African American girl of mixed heritage gets removed from her advanced placement class at Thurgood Marshall Elementary School because the instructor said that the students Afro made her "sick"-

R.J.'s book entitled: Black Hair In the 21st Century Poetry That Gets To the Root of the Matter is "The First Book of Its Kind" that addresses the Don Imus Controversy and the "State of Black Hair Today" was released in late May of 2010 the same week that the 8 year old girl was removed from her advanced placement class. R.J. Rahman writes about the racist and sexist comments made by Don Imus and others towards the Black female basketball players who were members of the 2007 Rutgers women's basketball team.

Now three years later an 8 year old African American girl is singled out and removed from an advanced placement class in which she is the only student of color; a class that she has been in for almost the entire school year, because of the instructors alleged allergic reaction to the scent of the young girls Afro. The young girl was removed from her class and told to stand in the hall way, then she was placed in a classroom of predominanly black students who were not in advanced placement for the remainder of the day, and then sent home. All of this happened without the parents of the young girl being notified! and if that weren't enough; the instructor in question said that she was able to single out the scent of the young girls Afro amongst the other scents within the classroom like chemical disinfectants, paints, metal cleaners, and other childern within the classroom that use scented shampoos, hairspray's and lotions.

R.J. Rahman states, that there are other unresolved issues at stake in this story besides an 8 year old students hairstyle and hair products, Rahman also states that we in the Black Community must not forget about what happened to this little girl and we must stand behind the Mudede family.
