The German capital is preparing to host the fourth edition of the European Month of Photography.

Running from October 15th to November 28th, the festival is actually six weeks long and will involve many of Berlin's leading galleries, museums and cultural institutions.

Photography-related shows and workshops will take place at venues throughout the city, with the final programme of events due for publication on September 15th.

There will be more than 150 exhibitions and 500 international photographers taking part, with over 10,000 images for guests of Berlin hotels to enjoy.

The European Month of Photography, which moves to a different German city every two years, aims to provide a platform for innovative photographers from around the world.

According to the organisers, the theme of this year's festival will be "Modern Life, New Images".

This means exhibitions will focus on pictures of metropolitan ways of life between the 19th and 21st centuries.

The official website states that the festival aims to explore "photography as an instrument of modernisation", with the various participating galleries asked to interpret this theme as they wish.

Visitors "can expect to find pictures that are surprising and disturbing, controversial and simply breathtaking", the organisers have promised.

Anticipated highlights of the festival include a retrospective of the Hungarian painter and photographer Laszlo Moholy-Nagy at the Martin-Gropius-Bau exhibition hall.

In addition, Galerie Kicken will display images by late Dutch lensman Ed van der Elsken and German photographer Barbara Klemm.

There will also be an exhibition dedicated to the influence of pioneering American street photographer Garry Winogrand at Camera Work.

Many of the displays should be free to attend, but visitors can check the details of individual galleries for prices.
