McKool Smith, P.C., one of the nation’s largest trial firms, is announcing the addition of John M. Shumaker as an associate in the firm’s Austin office.

Mr. Shumaker joins McKool Smith as an associate after previously holding the same position at the Houston office of Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP. He concentrates his practice on intellectual property litigation.

"John is an accomplished attorney with an exceptional educational background and plenty of real-world legal experience," says Mike McKool Jr., co-founder of McKool Smith. "We are very glad he has joined our firm, and everyone here is looking forward to working with him."

Mr. Shumaker handles every aspect of patent litigation, including matters related to integrated circuit design, computer memory, flash memory, hardware, software and computer operating systems. He also assists clients with infringement and inequitable conduct analyses for a wide variety of patents, as well as providing intellectual property due diligence analysis for companies involved in mergers and acquisitions.

Like many of the lawyers at McKool Smith, Mr. Shumaker is both an attorney and engineer. After securing his undergraduate degree at Vanderbilt University, he earned masters and doctorate degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Rice University. He went on to earn his legal degree at the University of Houston Law Center.

Mr. Shumaker is licensed to practice before the U.S. District Courts for the Southern and Eastern Districts of Texas, as well as the United States Patent and Trademark Office. In addition to co-authoring seven peer-reviewed articles, Mr. Shumaker also is a co-inventor of five registered patents.

McKool Smith has more than 85 attorneys in Dallas, Austin and Marshall, Texas, handling commercial and intellectual property litigation for national and international clients. The firm is recognized as one of the premier litigation law firms in the United States, having earned significant courtroom victories for clients such as Electronic Data Systems, BearingPoint, Ericsson, Cisco Systems, Medtronic Inc. and National Instruments.
