Senior CIIT Researcher Honored By The Society Of Toxicology

Dr. William Greenlee, president and CEO of CIIT Centers for Health Research, has announced that Harvey Joseph Clewell III, director of the Center for Human Health Assessment, received the Arnold J. Lehman Award for 2007 at the Society of Toxicology’s Annual Meeting in Charlotte March 25. The Arnold J. Lehman Award recognizes an individual who has made a major contribution to risk assessment and/or the regulation of chemical agents, including pharmaceuticals.

Clewell’s contributions have been with the use of physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) models, providing concrete examples of how PBPK models can be used in developing chemical risk assessments. He has played a major role in the first uses of PBPK modeling in cancer and non-cancer risk assessments by the United States Environmental Protection Agency, Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, Occupational Safety & Health Administration, and Food and Drug Administration, and has developed models for such chemicals as acetone, arsenic, coumarin, isopropanol, manganese, methylene chloride, methylmercury, retinoic acid, trichloroethylene, and vinyl chloride. Clewell is the fourth CIIT scientist to win this award, following Dr. Roger McClellan, Dr. Rory Conolly, and Dr. Melvin Andersen.

Harvey Joseph Clewell III is director of the Center for Human Health Assessment at CIIT, located in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. With more than 25 years of experience in environmental quality research, toxicology research, chemical risk assessment, and hazardous materials management, Clewell has gained an international reputation for his work in the application of physiologically-based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) modeling to chemical risk assessment. Clewell earned a B.A. cum laude in chemistry in 1969 from Bradley University in Peoria, Ill, and an M.A. in physical chemistry from Washington University in St. Louis, Mo. in 1971.
