The anniversary marks the time back in 1986 when Filipinos gathered in Manila for a non-violent demonstration against the government of the time. Many of the people saw the government as corrupt and the revolution that took place in the capital helped to successfully overthrow the ruling party and reinstate democracy to the Philippines.

Celebrations are set to be staged around the country on 28th February 2011 in remembrance of the events which occurred from 22nd to 25th February 1986. In Manila especially, people mark the occasion by wearing yellow which was the colour of the opposition party who challenged the original government. Concert and church services will also be part of the day’s activities and visitors can see many people carrying "L" shaped signs in the form of a thumb and index finger.

The day is awarded as a holiday for schools although businesses remain open and therefore demand for a cheap Boracay hotel is set to rise as more families use the time to travel to the popular holiday island.

Lek Boonlert, marketing head at commented: "The People Power Anniversary marks an important time in Filipino history. Festivities will be occurring in many places and people and hotels will be busier as people come together for the day. Advanced bookings are advised for anyone planning on heading to the island over the course of the celebrations."
