DirectRooms.com – Market of Miracles in Venice throughout this March 2011

Published: Mon Feb 21 2011

The Market of Miracles is the one and only time that Venice organises an antiques and second-hand market that is run by non-professionals. It is therefore an ideal opportunity for scavenger hunters looking to snag rare goods from individual sellers.

Some of the objects that can be found at the Market of Miracles include books, comics and prints. There will also be a slew of other collectors’ items up for sale.

Because it is not run by professionals, the event can be enjoyed by both serious collectors and casual buyers alike. Even if guests buy nothing, there is plenty to see. Many items are specific to the local culture.

The Market of Miracles is housed at the Campo Santa Maria Nova. Campo Santa Maria Nova is located near Santa Maria del Miracoli, a marble-clad church housing an image of the Virgin Mary. Also nearby is the Palazzo Bembo-Boldu, featuring huge windows and intricate architecture.

There are many cheap Venice hotels that can place visitors right at the heart of the market.

The entire area is worth exploring after a trip to the market. San Canciano is within walking distance. This 14th century church has gone through many trials and rebuilding projects during its history. Today, it is known as the church that John Singer Sargent used as his inspiration when painting "Leading Church, Campo San Canciano, Venice."

Just across a bridge is an interesting sight – an old double-sided iron hook which locals believe brings good luck. The origins of the odd hook remain mysterious.
