Eating a breakfast high in carbohydrates key to fighting the battle of the bulge

That breakfast is the most important meal of the day has become a cliché. But how seriously do we take the breaking of our nightly fasts?

In a world where our daily eating routines are dictated by the clock, many of us tend to skip breakfast in our rush to get to work, get the kids to school, etc. Any nutritionist will tell you that in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle, the rule of thumb is: eat a king’s breakfast, a rich man’s lunch and pauper’s dinner. However, many people seem to dismiss breakfast as the least important meal of the day, preferring to consume most of their calories in just one sitting – dinner.

It is important to remember that when we wake up in the morning, our body has essentially just experienced eight to twelve hours of fasting, which means that the body’s supply of glucose is at its lowest. Since glucose is an important source of energy, our bodies need to restore its blood sugar content in order for us to have enough energy to get through the day. If we don’t, then our daily activities, both physical and mental, will be adversely affected.

What we eat for breakfast is also important. Grabbing a donut or a bowl of cereal drowned in milk on your way out the door just won’t do it, due to the fact that they are high in sugar and will only lead to an excess storage of fat. Not a great choice for the most important meal of the day!

On the other hand, if your goal is to reduce fat, which is the case with most people, why not start the morning off with a bowl of oatmeal?

Oatmeal, a nutritional grain whose benefits are widely recognized, is free of both sodium and cholesterol, and is also low in fat. In addition, oatmeal is a great source of water-soluble fibers, which helps dieters by giving that ‘full’ feeling over a longer period of time, an extremely important factor when trying to lose weight, as it provides dieters with a more sustained level of energy and less junk food cravings.

Another great thing about oatmeal is that it is also very ‘natural’. In other words, by including oatmeal in your breakfast everyday, you refrain from putting any additives or preservatives into your body. In an over-processed world, this is great news.

Complex carbohydrates such as oatmeal are a good source of energy to prepare for the day, and, contrary to popular belief (compliments to fad diets such as the Atkins and South Beach diets), people do not need to cut out this very important source of energy to fight the battle of the bulge. In fact, it is important that we appreciate the long-term benefits of good carbohydrates as part of a healthy lifestyle, particularly as a breakfast food.
