The holiday is one of the most holy in the Islamic calendar and worshippers gather to give praise and thanks and hear readings recited of the Prophet's ascent.

The Prophet ascended into heaven is said to have travelled part of the way to heaven with the Angel Gabriel and encountered other well-known prophets on the way such as Adam, Abraham and Moses.

Jordan's government permits a normal day's business for Lailat ul Miraj, meaning that hotels, restaurants, hospitals and the like remain open. Petra is a busy place throughout the festival though so visitors are advised to book accommodation in advance.
