Petra hotels can expect a bumper time as pilgrims from all over the region head to Jordan to give thanks and enjoy the festivities, reports online hotel room comparator DirectRooms.com.

The Prophet Mohammed said to have been spiritually relocated into heaven on this day and the festival is known as Lailat ul Miraj in Arabic. The holiday is one of the most holy in the Islamic calendar and worshippers gather to give praise and thanks and hear readings recited of the Prophet's ascent.

The Prophet ascended into heaven is said to have travelled part of the way to heaven with the Angel Gabriel and encountered other well-known prophets on the way such as Adam, Abraham and Moses.

Jordan's government permits a normal day's business for Lailat ul Miraj, meaning that hotels, restaurants, hospitals and the like remain open. Petra is a busy place throughout the festival though so visitors are advised to book accommodation in advance.

Lek Boonlert, marketing head at DirectRooms.com comments: "People from all over the world and not just the Middle East head for Petra to enjoy this hugely significant festival. Lailat ul Miraj attracts tens of thousands so we do advise people to book Petra hotels to stay well ahead of travelling to be sure of getting a good deal and availability in the location that they want."
