The ice-skating and ice hockey elements of the 2011 Winter Games are to be held in Dunedin. The town boasts an international size ice rink that can seat up to 1,850 visitors as well as an Olympic size ice hockey arena. Dunedin is New Zealand’s oldest town and is situated on the South Island.

The Winter Games were established in 2009 to act as a promotional tool for New Zealand’s sports athletes. The event is viewed as an opportunity for athletes to challenge themselves in their individual sports.

The Winter Games have the complete support of the New Zealand Government, and the government has invested in the Games through the Major Events Development Fund. A special ‘100% Pure New Zealand’ programme has also been established to promote the Games. The impressive list of sponsors includes local authorities, KIA car manufacturers, Juicy Car Rental, and Air New Zealand.

As well as hosting the skating and ice events, Dunedin will also be putting on a fantastic closing party on the 28th of August. The festivities make it useful to have a hotel in Dunedin booked for the night. This gig is set to feature some of the finest of New Zealand’s musicians.
