A 'Gran Fondo' is a race event which tests even the most experienced and fittest competitors. The format of the event is a walking, biking and cross-country hiking event which is around 120 kilometers in length. The race has its origins in an event first staged more than 500 years ago.

Lorne is home to some of the most spectacular scenery and walking routes in all of Australia, and as such forms a picture-perfect backdrop to the event. Entrants who are taking part in Amy's Gran Fondo will test themselves both on foot and on mountain bikes against some of the most unforgiving terrain in the southern hemisphere.

The event kicks off on the 18th September and the local Lorne Great Ocean Road and imposing Cumberland River both make up parts of the course. Race organisers have speculated that more than 3,000 people will be heading to Lorne to test themselves against nature and the elements, meaning cheap Lorne hotels will be at a premium.

Lek Boonlert, marketing head at DirectRooms.com said: "The Amy's Gran Fondo event has a proud reputation around the world as a real test for endurance fans. As such, with this being the first time it will be held in Australia, Lorne can expect many thousands more visitors than usual for the time of year."
