South Shore Elder Services to hold Education Workshop Series for Professional Caregivers

DATELINE: BRAINTREE, MA... For nurses, social workers and other professional caregivers of the elderly, South Shore Elder Services will hold a "Building Resilience in the Family Caregiver" educational workshop series on three consecutive Wednesday evenings, October 19th, October 26th and November 2nd. South Shore Elder Services is a private, non-profit agency located in Braintree, Mass., that provides seniors and caregivers in the South Shore area with valuable resources and services.

Deborah Colgan, Regional Family Support Coordinator for the ElderCare Network Southeast which is housed at South Shore Elder Services, developed the "Building Resilience in the Family Caregiver" educational workshop series and will lead each workshop. Ms. Colgan holds graduate degrees in counseling psychology and adult education and has 32 years of professional experience in the mental health field, working both as a clinician and a clinical supervisor with various populations, including the elderly and their informal caregivers.

The workshops will be held at South Shore Elder Services’ offices located at 159 Bay State Drive (off Granite Street) in Braintree from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Workshop I will be held on October 19th and address topics of the normal developmental tasks of late adulthood and the five stage developmental process of the caregiving relationship.

Workshop II will be held on October 26th and will address how chronic illness and/or cognitive impairment affect the caregiving relationship. The indicators of caregiver burnout will also be discussed during this workshop.

Workshop III will be held November 2nd and will cover strategies to reduce caregiver burnout and promote caregiver resilience, as well as, ways in which to identify communication tools to enhance family resilience and successful care planning.

Each workshop includes supper and provides 1.5 continuing education units for nurses and social workers. The cost is $20.00 per evening and one can attend the entire series or select an individual workshop.
