Previously, the festival was solely famous for its renowned oysters but 2011 sees the introduction of all seafood to the festival menu. The festival this year will be a celebration of Irish cuisine and Irish seafood producers and eateries.
The Sunday Times claims the festival is one of the 12 greatest shows on earth and the celebration’s packed agenda certainly merits this description. Starting on Friday the 23rd of October, visitors will be able to take part in a seafood ‘Dine Around’ and sample gourmet fish delights in Galway’s finest restaurants. Some visitors may prefer to take part in the Oyster Opening Championships that will be held in the Festival Marquee on Galway Harbour. Entrants have to be able to open 18 oysters in 120 seconds, no mean feat, and the whole evening is accompanied by live music.
Saturday the 24th of October will see a whole variety of events including the Bollinger Oyster Tasting Championship, which will take place in the Festival Marquee from Noon until 17.00hrs. Last year’s title holder was John Malm from Sweden. The ‘Best Dressed Lady’ competition is also part of this event.
Visitors flood to Galway for the festival, so it is advisable for festival goers to book into one of the many Galway city centre hotels in order to participate in as many of the events as they wish.
