Brampton, ON -- TLDicons are graphic icons, which, when placed with a company’s brand or logo, negates the need to use www. and .com, (for example), when illustrating on-line presence. They are for signs, stationary, advertising, products, packaging, web pages… anything.
TLDicons were created for the sole purpose of avoiding having to use www. and .com with a Brand.
A logo had been created for a small, yet-to-be-released product, which accurately reflected the item with an amazingly appropriate font. While exploring imprinting solutions, a printer enquired if there was going to be a website associated with this product, and if so, said www. and .com had to be put around the logo. The reaction to this was an immediate NO! The text www. and .com would detract from the new logo in an unacceptable manner, whether it was in a similar, or different font. There had to be another option - another way to "say" .com, without using the text. It was thought that if there were a graphic that MEANT .com - like an icon - there would be no problem with using that, but there wasn’t one. So, based on the need for an option, TLDicons were created.
TLDicons are very basic wire-frame graphics with ample interior space. They all feature a circle, representing "dot" followed by an identifier for the particular domain. Dot com uses a stylized C. The most valuable aspect about them is the fact that they are customizable shells. The unique flexibility of a TLDicon is that you fill the interior of the shell with whatever color or graphics you require to compliment the branding or logo you are working with. You resize the icon to best fit, and then place it with the logo in the most appropriate position. Creative latitude is so wide with these icons that they can be radically altered, and even morphed into an existing or new logo. The important thing is to retain the general shape and look of it once it is customized, so it is distinguishable as a TLDicon and retains its usefulness as a domain identifier.
When the distinctive elements of a company’s branding are extended to a TLDicon, it makes the whole look of indicating there is a website associated with the brand almost seamless - and this, is what makes them, a very, powerful, tool. One such example is www.MetaCryL.com ’s morphing of an element of the logo directly into a TLDicon, and another is www.SnappyBids.com ’s very creative "out of the box" use of elements of their trade.
In an attempt to reclaim their distinctive branding, many companies with on-line presence have dropped the prefix www from everything they possibly can. Others have attempted to blend the text .com into their branding by incorporating it somehow, by stylizing it, using the same font as the logo, and a variety of other methods, with limited success in making it "disappear" but "be noticeable". But no matter how it is changed, the word .com, doesn’t compliment the majority of logos, and has a stranglehold on branding. Creative departments stretch the limits of imagination trying to work with the text www. and .com, but more often than not the brand or logo suffers.
Companies are still struggling to indicate on-line presence without detracting from their well established Brand. They look to their Ad Agencies to provide the creative solutions to the web’s intrusion. Branding is a valuable asset, and that asset has to be reclaimed, but as long as the text www. and .com are the only choice, there won’t be any progress made as far as change. TLDicons are the Ad Agencies new tool. One which opens exciting new doors to new levels of creativity and will unleash vivid imaginations.
Included with TLDicons are their respective audio counterparts TLDtones, which are short jingles offering the same flexibility when internet presence needs to be conveyed by using a sound in audio presentations such as on radio, or within multimedia.
Created by MetaCryL, a Product Concept and Development firm, and released in January of 2005, TLDicons are the only way to show the presence of a website, with an icon. The site illustrates some basic wire-frame, rudimentary colored and custom icons, as examples. Creativity is up to you.
