New York’s Renewable Energy Tax Rebates and Incentives

DATELINE: NEW YORK, NY AND WORCESTER, MA... Need to replace your old furnace? Or, are you looking for ways to slash your heating costs? New York taxpayers who choose to use energy efficient or renewable energy products will be rewarded with special tax rebates and incentives.

With customers around the globe, the Alternative Energy Store provides a wealth of products and renewable energy information through their online store ( and catalog.

Making it easy for consumers, the Alternative Energy Store has outlined several of New York’s renewable energy rebates and incentives:

Homeowners who purchase a PV (photovoltaics) system may receive a 25% income tax credit, with a maximum credit of up to $3,750.
Take advantage of the state’s 15-year real property tax exemption if you’re a New York homeowner who has installed solar energy equipment in your home.
Receive a personal tax credit of up to 25% for solar electric and solar-thermal systems such as solar space heat, solar water heat and photovoltaics and up to 20% for fuel cells.
Businesses and homeowners can receive a utilities rebate of up to $5 per watt (up to $50,000) for the first 5kW of PV installed.
Forget about paying sales tax on that solar-energy system for your home. This sales tax exemption applies to home heating, cooling, hot water and electricity, not swimming pool heating.
Taking out a loan for a new major appliance such as a refrigerator, clothes washer or dryer, dishwasher or furnace? If you choose appliances that use solar water heat, solar space heat, photovoltaics, wind, biomass or geothermal heat pumps, opt for an Energy Smart Loan offering 4.0% below the lender rate for ten years.
Any multifamily, residential, commercial, industrial, retail or non-profit facility that is a customer of a one of New York’s six utilities may take advantage of the New York Energy Smart Loan for a reduced interest rate loan for renovation/construction of energy efficient facility or installation of renewable energy systems.

"The bottom line is that renewable energy and energy efficient products can help homeowners and businesses save a lot of money, not just initially through hefty tax rebates, but on an ongoing basis. For example, by installing a solar hot water system, a homeowner can reduce their hot water heating costs by as much as 90 percent. Not only that, but a solar hot water system pays for itself several times over in energy savings during its useful life. That’s quite a return on investment," noted Sascha Deri, president of the Alternative Energy Store.
