PRESS RELEASE
‘BROKE’ – MENTOR KOLEKTIV

ALBUM TITLE: ‘BROKE’
ARTIST: MENTOR KOLEKTIV
RELEASE DATE: 21st NOVEMBER 2005

Terrorism, STDs, ‘butters’ girls and arranged marriages…’Broke’, the cutting edge Asian hip hop debut from west Londoners the Mentor Kolektiv, deals with what rapper AC calls ‘second generation bizniz’- and its raw, witty, unflinchingly honest and refreshingly real.

Bringing together award-winning producer Mentor (Jay Sean, Craig David, Timbaland, Nitin Sawhney), rapper AC, Punjabi vocalist Des-C & 2Point9/Kiss FM mix DJ Mr Mak, this is the Kolektiv’s first official outing after their hit ‘Volume 1 mixtape’.

The grimey debut smashes lame stereotypes of Asian youth, instead turning the spotlight on what’s really on their minds - and coming up with an album set to be to Brit-Asian youth what NWA’s ‘Straight Outta Compton’ was to the kids of black America.

South Harrow boy Mentor drives proceedings, delivering everything from lazy west coast-flava hip hop (on witty title-track ‘Broke’) to thumping dancehall (underground hit ‘Party in Bombay’) to straight up UK grime (‘Whatcha Gonna Do’), proving himself a bonafide urban heavyweight while effortlessly paying homage to a rich heritage of bhangra, Indian classical & folk music.

AC’s witty wordplay, biting social commentary and deft storytelling give the album it’s edge and ground it firmly in the realm of UK hip hop, while Des-C’s lush Punjabi vocals bring a rich, rootsy feel to every track.

‘PASAND’ – the first track to be taken from the album – is a beats-led bhangra affair that provides a fitting introduction to Des-C’s traditional Indian melodies and ruffneck AC’s wildly contrasting tongue-in-cheek rhymes about raving and girls.

The album’s title track ‘BROKE’ is another stand-out cut that’s already receiving critical acclaim from club DJ’s and tastemakers, with AC’s humour-fuelled tales of rapping for food and surviving on air in the world’s most expensive city.

Other highlights include reflective lament on the London bombings ‘7/7’, rock-hip hop fusion ‘HAS THE WORLD GONE MAD’ and the grime / dancehall inspired NOKA TAAL, a Brit-Asian riddim that flips between AC’s fast-paced rant ‘’WHATCHA GONNA DO" featuring Gappy Ranks from North West London’s vice-law entertainment crew.

‘PASAND’ is out now. Check the video on all good video channels. The single ‘BROKE’ drops soon, with the video premiering on 3 Mobile. The album ‘BROKE’ is released at the end of November 2005.
