British Gas was obviously reluctant to carry out this price rise due to the reception increases in price get from customers. Everyone’s the same, as soon as a rise in price comes through and people are notified about it, the supplier immediately becomes unpopular and people start seeking out alternative solutions. It’s almost unavoidable.

Woodburning-Stoves.co.uk, a large online retailer of log burning and multi-fuel stoves have predicted that search volumes for alternative methods of heating will increase this winter quite substantially. Although the increase in electric and gas will only cost the average person an extra £1.50 a week, this equates to over £80 extra per year. In this economic climate, £80 is a lot for a family who are already struggling.

Paul Dickinson, Product Manager at Woodburning-Stoves.co.uk commented on the story: "A lot of people are with British Gas and this price rise won’t go unnoticed. Over the past few days, I’ve already had a few friends enquire about the price of stoves and the running costs; so it’s evident that people aren’t just going to stand by and do nothing!"

"I’m aware British Gas are doing all they can to keep costs under control; but it’s hard to look past the efficiency of a wood burner in comparison. Due to the temperatures barely dipping below 0°C in winter, heating the whole house with a single stove isn’t usually a problem, unless you have a draughty, five bedroom beast. Logs are considerably cheaper to use than gas/electric, even if you buy in top quality seasoned wood – much better if you can source your own. With efficiency ratings hitting over 80% for stoves nowadays, there’s literally no reason not to consider one as an alternative to a regular heating system."
British Gas states that the price hike is down to rising wholesale costs which they simply have no control over and thus are forced to increase theirs to match the market.

Scott Morris, E-Commerce Manager at Woodburning-Stoves added the following: "Over the weekend we’ve seen a fairly noticeable spike in traffic to the website and the amount of impressions we’ve had on our advertising campaigns. This could just be due to the winter getting closer, but it’s likely to be a side-effect of the latest price increases. Our range of budget stoves have also peaked in sales this weekend, so hopefully the trend continues over the next month or two!"
