Lakeville, Minneapolis Braces Expert Shares Potential Treatment Pitfalls

In Minneapolis, Prior Lake and other Minnesota towns, orthodontists are quick to tout orthodontic treatment's numerous benefits.

But treatment carries potential pitfalls, too, said Dr. Trudy Bonvino, the orthodontist on staff at the Prior Lake and Lakeville orthodontics practice Cosmopolitan Orthodontics.

Bonvino identified the following five potential treatment pitfalls:

1. The provider lack specialized training
Some cases are straightforward- others, quite complicated. Choose an orthodontist who has completed the appropriate training, which helps ensure successful treatment, Bonvino said. Ask the provider about qualifications, education and experience.

2. Decalcification
Decalcification is a known complication of orthodontic treatment. It often results from the patient's failure to practice good oral hygiene. Braces and other orthodontic appliances can create nooks and crannies where bacteria gather, said Bonvino, a Minneapolis Invisalign Teen provider. Decalcification looks like chalky white spots on teeth and leads to cavities in severe cases.

3. Root resorption
The degeneration or loss of root structure, root resorption takes place if teeth move too quickly if they're too far outside the bone. Pressure resulting from orthodontic movement can be the cause.

4. Periodontal disease
No one wants to complete treatment and wind up with periodontal disease. Patients can take measures to prevent that by maintaining a good brushing and flossing regimen throughout treatment. Gum inflammation and jaw bone loss happen when plaque isn't removed daily.

5. Relapse
Fact: teeth shift throughout life, with or without orthodontic treatment.

Make a retainer part of life for life, Bonvino said. Wearing it even after being released from orthodontic care helps ensure teeth maintain proper alignment.

"Even putting it in every couple of weeks serves as a tooth movement indicator," Minneapolis braces expert said. "If wearing it causes pressure, wear it until it feels comfortable again."
