Elephant.co.uk reveals car breakdowns peak during Monday rush hour

Having your car break down can happen to anyone but online car insurance specialist, elephant.co.uk, has looked into when, to who and where breakdowns happen the most.

Of the 70,000 motorists who used elephant.co.uk's breakdown service over the last two years, the most common time to break down was on a Monday between 8am and 9am.

There was also a high concentration of breakdowns on weekends around the middle of the day, but between 3am and 4am on Wednesdays and Thursday was found to be the least busy.

The online insurance specialist also revealed that most people are alone when their car breaks down. More than three quarters of the vehicles where assistance was provided had one occupant, while one fifth had two occupants and less than 4% had three or more occupants.

elephant.co.uk managing director, Brian Martin said: "Lots of cars will be on the road between 8am and 9am when there’s going to be a lot of congestion in most towns and cities.

"Breaking down at that time of day is not going to be easy and a lone driver may struggle to move their vehicle out of the way while they wait for a breakdown service to arrive."

In terms of the gender of the driver, the car insurance specialist discovered more men than women are likely to require assistance. 56% of all the callouts were by men with just 44% from women.

Brian Martin continued: "We also found that most of our call outs took place in London which has got to be one of the worst places to break down during rush hour.

"But, the fact is most motorists will have to deal with their car breaking down at some point, so it’s important to make sure that you can get the help you need if anything does go wrong."
