The Full Frame Documentary Film Festival (www.fullframefest.org), has announced a curated sidebar for the 11th annual Festival April 3-6 in downtown Durham. The Inhabiting Space Sidebar, curated by Nancy Buirski, founder and advisor to the Festival, will include the following films:

• "The 3 Rooms of Melancholia" Directed by Pirjo Honkasalo and produced by Kristiina Pervilä
Sunday, April 6, 11 a.m.
This film reveals the melancholy world of Chechnya, divided into three rooms, each an elegiac portrayal of a land without spirit. The first room introduces cadets in a military academy; it is in the subtle detail of their ritualistic habits that the emptiness of their lives can be understood. The apocalyptic city of Groznyy, utterly destroyed by war, is portrayed in the second room. Finally, the effects of the war in a town close by are felt in the third room, giving the sense that this war has traveled through the air, touching everyone. The film’s elegant score and powerful imagery draw the audience into spaces that few would want to inhabit. Albeit sad, this film it is a monumental achievement and paean to the wastes of war.

• "Sud (South)" Directed by Chantal Akerman and produced by Xavier Carniaux
Thursday, April 3, 2 p.m.
This French filmmaker takes viewers under the skin of Jasper, Texas, the scene of the brutal slaying of James Byrd, Jr. Akerman’s experimental approach to the film rejects journalistic coverage as well as a clear story line, by capturing the town's emotional state of mind, from interviews to drive-by observations. She slows down her camera, lingering on cotton fields and on trees swaddled in kudzu, taking full measure of the town. Well before "Two Towns of Jasper" examined Jasper’s political realities, this film made us feel what it is like to live in Jasper, and to breathe its air.

• "La Tropical" Directed and produced by David Turnley
Saturday, April 5, 9:45 p.m.
This film is reminiscent of "La Buena Vista Social Club," but even more sensuous. The rhythm of a country is refracted through the sights and sounds of a nightclub where world-class dancers and musicians gather to entertain and celebrate in the energy of the working class. Viewers cannot help but feel the heat and the motion of the swaying bodies and vibrant music, and exult in the liberation that comes from the senses.
