According to a survey conducted by Johnson & Johnson in the United Arab Emirates which has subsequently been published in the public domain, nearly one person in four in the country seeks no treatment whatsoever when experiencing digestive problems such as diarrhoea as they believe that the symptoms are not severe enough to warrant medical intervention or because they mistakenly believe that diarrhoea is the body's natural way of purging itself of toxins. It is interesting to note that many people in the United Arab Emirates have stated that they would not seek treatment for their digestive ailments even when their problems persist for over one month. In addition, according to numerous nutritionists, many people in the United Arab Emirates have accepted that they suffer from frequent headaches, feel bloated, have low energy levels and suffer from acidity problems after eating. Heartburn and constipation were also reported as very common problems among the United Arab Emirates population during 2013, a situation which is due mainly to the high fat content of the average diet in the United Arab Emirates as well as dehydration and a general lack of physical activity.

Competitive Landscape

GlaxoSmithKline Plc led digestive remedies in 2013 with a 19% value share. The company achieved this position through its high brand equity and the popularity of Zantac, its leading digestive remedies brand. Sanofi-Aventis and Reckitt Benckiser followed in second and third positions respectively with similar value shares thanks to the company's globally famous brands Maalox and Gaviscon. These companies are able to leverage on their global popularity as well as high levels of investment in advertising.

Industry Prospects

It is unlikely that the common trend of not treating digestive problems will change substantially in the United Arab Emirates during the forecast period as this is a deeply cultural ingrained behaviour. Nevertheless, as the government of the United Arab Emirates engages in attempts to boost awareness of the importance of curing digestive symptoms, it is possible that an increasing number of the United Arab Emirates' consumers will seek the advice of pharmacists when they experiencing digestive issues.
