Air was seriously affected by the bankruptcy of the main national air carrier, Malev Hungarian Airlines Rt, in February 2012. There was a decline of 5% in the number of people travelling by air in 2012; however this was compensated for by the rapid restructuring which took place in air after the ceasing of operations of Malev Hungarian Airlines Rt. While the airline capacity of schedule declined by 42% in 2012, airline capacity of low cost carriers grew by 51% while value sales of low cost carriers grew by 63%.

Competitive Landscape

Malev Hungarian Airlines Rt, which, in 2011, was the leading player in air and which accounted for a retail value share of 46% of schedule, was liquidated in April 2012. This resulted in a large gap in air and in thorough restructuring in both schedule and low cost carriers. In 2007, after several attempts at privatisation and restructuring of its operations, Malev Hungarian Airlines Rt was sold to Russian-owned Airbridge. The new owner was unable to inject enough capital to save the company and by 2010 Malev Hungarian Airlines Rt was heavily in debt. Therefore, the government chose to re-nationalise the company in order to be allowed to invest in its restructuring; however, this also proved unsuccessful thus the company was forced to cease operations in 2012.
