After having taken over Kloppenburg in 2008, Rossmann KG gradually converted the company's stores into Rossmann drugstores. The last remaining outlets were turned into Rossmann stores in 2013, thereby no longer being variety stores. The resulting reduction in value sales was apparent in the overall development of retail value sales for mixed retailers, causing a slight decline in 2013.

Competitive Landscape

In 2013, Galeria Kaufhof and Karstadt Warenhaus led the mixed retailers channel, mainly due to their relatively higher prices, offer of more premium products and their larger store and company sizes overall.

Industry Prospects

With the number of successful variety stores continuously increasing and department stores starting to recover from strong declines, especially during the years of the euro crisis, the wider channel is expected to perform better over the forecast period than the review period, albeit registering fairly flat growth in value terms at constant 2013 prices. This will compare favourably to the 6% CAGR decline registered over 2008-2013.
