Consumption in the foodservice channel continued to underperform in 2013 due to the impact of the recession in Spain. With lower disposable incomes and uncertainty regarding employment, consumers have been trying to save money by reducing their spending on non-essential goods, for example relying heavily on commodities and opting not to consume coffee outside the home. In particular, breakfast-time foodservice consumption suffered the most, as coffee is considered a key element of this meal. In addition, the consumption of coffee at work also fell as a result of this trend towards saving, with consumers opting not to purchase coffee during their breaks. In 2013 on-trade sales fell by 4% in volume terms and while the worst period of the crisis seems to be over, if the macroeconomic factors in the country are considered consumption is not expected to significantly recover in the short term.

Competitive Landscape
Most of the leading brands in Spain, both in terms of value and volume, are offered by international manufacturers. However, within the top five, private label players Mercadona SA and Carrefour SA are present, with their products being produced by domestic roasters. There are also dozens of smaller national producers with small shares; they tend to be relevant in localised areas of Spain rather than across the whole geographical territory.
Industry Prospects
The coffee category is expected to grow over the forecast period, posting an anticipated total volume CAGR of 2%. Recovery of the on-trade channel will be slower than previously expected, despite the apparent recovery of the macroeconomic factors; this will be due to the low trust of consumers and high unemployment rates towards 2018. On-trade coffee sales will continue to fall, posting an annual volume decline of 2%. However, off-trade coffee sales will continue to drive the category, growing at a 4% volume CAGR and a 5% CAGR at constant 2013 prices over the forecast period. Breakfast at home will continue to be a trend in Spain until at least 2015. In addition, the increasing sophistication of the Spanish coffee consumer is expected to drive demand for high-quality coffee for domestic consumption.
