Just Released: "Grocery Retailers in Uruguay"

From: Fast Market Research, Inc.
Published: Wed Jun 18 2014

There were no significant changes within grocery retailers in 2013 in comparison to the previous year. Again in 2013, supermarkets were expanding in the interior of the country, as they were limited in growth terms in Montevideo due to the local government's restrictive regulatory policy. The acquisition of all Multi Ahorro operations by supermarket chain Ta-Ta had yet to make an impact in 2013 as both chains continued to address consumers independently in much the same way they did before the acquisition.

Competitive Landscape

Supermarket and hypermarket chains continued to lead grocery retailers in terms of value sales in 2013. Ta-Ta, after completing the acquisition of Mimatec (Multi Ahorro supermarkets) and Sistemar (Multi Ahorro Express) has become by far the largest chain, covering Montevideo and all departamentos (provinces). The company is in the process of unifying all supermarket operations under its own Ta-Ta brand, a task that will probably be completed in 2014. The combined value share of the company's three chains was 9% of grocery retailers in 2013, outselling all the other major chains, Tienda Inglesa, Devoto, Disco, Geant and El Dorado.

Industry Prospects

The most important change in grocery retailers seen in 2013 was Ta-Ta's acquisition of all of Multi Ahorro's operations, which consolidates this company as the largest retailer in Uruguay. Though its expansion will surely slow down during the forecast period, the company already has plans for incorporating its stores into some of the new shopping centre projects. The future of the new Kinko and Frog stores will probably be decided in the short term. If the company succeeds in gaining the preference of consumers in the Pocitos neighbourhood with this new format, it could complete its expansion plans for opening other stores in different areas of Montevideo during the forecast period.
