Sales of vitamins and dietary supplements were driven by rising health awareness and growing interest in prevention and self-care among Czech consumers over the review period. Nevertheless, similar to other consumer health categories, vitamins and dietary supplements also partially suffered from consumers reducing their expenditure at the end of the review period. Due to the ongoing poor economic situation, many consumers reduced their purchases of many products and this also affected vitamins and dietary supplements, resulting in 2% current value growth in 2012. Although this growth was an improvement compared to 2011 and 2010, it was lower compared to that of 2009 and 2008. Retail value sales of vitamins and dietary supplements in 2012 were also supported by a rise in the VAT rate from 10% to 14% which increased prices of these products on retailers' shelves.
