Recent Study: Canned/Preserved Food Packaging in Switzerland

According to an article in the daily Swiss newspaper 20 Minuten/20 minutes from November 2011, only around 11% of respondents stated that they eat canned food out of a metal food can a few times a week, and 26% stated once a week; around 52% stated that they hardly ever eat canned food. Overall, canned food is not extremely popular in Switzerland, and Swiss customers would rather opt to purchase fresh vegetables or meat than eat canned food. However, the product variety of canned food is large in Swiss retailing and makes up for a large proportion of sales.

Industry Prospects

In order to attract consumers to purchasing more canned food products, and particularly canned fruit over the forecast period, packaging companies are increasingly seeking innovative new packaging designs. A recently launched example is canned fruit products under the brand Materne Pom'Potes, available via the Coop supermarkets chain. The preserved fruit mix comes in aluminium/plastic pouches with a resealable plastic screw closure in small filling sizes of 90g each. The product manufacturer claims on the packaging that one pouch equals one portion of fruit. The main target groups for this new packaging format are school children, working people or health-conscious consumers. Another example of a private label offering is M Budget Apfelmus in 100g aluminium/plastic pouches from the Migros supermarket chain.Overview
