Passenger car sales in the Czech Republic increased 17.4% year-on-year (y-o-y) in the first four months of 2014, to 60,491 units. This is commensurate with our bullish view on export-led manufacturing growth filtering through to increases in private consumption levels and car purchases. However, we expect this export-led recovery to temper somewhat in the latter half of the year, and this is likely to weigh on passenger car sales. Accordingly, we forecast 10% growth in this segment in 2014, an upgrade from our previous forecast for 3% growth.

Škoda Auto registered a 15.5% y-o-y rise in deliveries to 89,600 cars globally in April, compared with 77,600 in the year-ago period. The automaker posted a 20.7% rise in deliveries across Europe, while its deliveries increased 7.6% and 3% in China and Russia respectively. Deliveries of Skoda's Octavia model grew approximately 60% in Western Europe.

BMI has long maintained that the export-led recovery in the country will feed through to a brightening domestic demand story in 2014. This is playing out, and consumer confidence is improving. BMI believes this will temper private consumption levels in the second half of the year, and we expect to see a moderation in growth in autos sales in H214.

In terms of output, light vehicle production in the Czech Republic increased 4.1% in 2013, to 1,128,473 units. This follows a surge in Q413 on the back of a marked improvement in the European market, the country's main export destination. BMI expects this positive...
