Alcoholic Drinks Packaging in Switzerland - New Report Available

The most important packaging type for the Swiss alcoholic beverage industry is the traditional glass bottle in both retail and foodservice. Around 70% of the beer produced in Switzerland is filled in glass bottles, around 98% of wine is filled in glass bottles and almost all spirits available in Switzerland come in glass bottles. According to Vetropack, a leading Swiss glass manufacturer, glass is so popular because it is natural and taste-neutral. Furthermore, it is 100% recyclable and refillable. The production of glass for the wine and beer industry increased by 4% in 2011 in Switzerland. Due to the fact that glass production is costly and energy intensive, around 45% of beer glass bottles are returnable, but only in the foodservice channel. Glass bottles from the retail channel can be recycled in glass containers, but there is a deposit charged on bottles and crates for foodservice establishments. The returnable bottles are cleaned and refilled at the breweries.

Industry Prospects

In the forecast period glass will continue to be the packaging type of choice for most alcoholic beverage producers. Glass production is costly and thus most glass bottles are being refilled by manufacturers that make glass 100% recyclable. The increased concern for environmental protection and the urge to minimise the usage of raw materials is ever conscious in the minds of consumers, who, in the end, will make the purchasing decisions.
