Smoking being linked to premature ageing was also a strong message for youngsters. Whilst some gave up smoking altogether, many reduced the number of cigarettes they smoked. Consequently, retail volume sales of cigarettes dropped significantly in 2013.

Competitive Landscape

Cigarettes in Switzerland was dominated by the three leading multinationals in 2013: Philip Morris (PM) with a volume share of 41%, British American Tobacco (BAT) with a 35% share and Japan Tobacco International (JTI) with a 15% share. These multinationals expanded their product and brand ranges in order to create buoyancy in the market, which is suffering massively under strict legislation. This helped in their share growth and in the growth of their premium brands.

Industry Prospects
