Malaysia Tourism Report Q3 2014 - New Study Released

BMI's tourism report for Malaysia examines the expected growth across a range of indicators in this burgeoning market. Solid domestic economic growth is boosting outbound travel, while inbound arrivals are blossoming, leading to increased receipts from tourism-related expenditure and boosting overall industry value.

Following a period of minimal growth over 2011 and 2012, arrivals from some key source markets dipped in 2013, as many countries continued to struggle to recover from the global economic crisis. Moving forward, as these markets return to economic growth, we expect to see annual growth of more than 5% in terms of the number of annual arrivals to Malaysia, leading to a total inbound tourism figure of 34.4mn by 2018. This is an increase of more than 8mn on the 2013 arrivals figure, reflecting both the health and potential of the market. The Asia Pacific region, thanks to the multitude and ease of travel connections, will continue to dominate Malaysia's inbound arrivals market, accounting for just under 31mn visitors in 2018.

The government is highly supportive of tourism in the country and has set ambitious growth targets of attracting 36mn visitors per year by 2020 along with tourism income of MYR168bn. We believe Malaysia is well on track to meet and even exceed these targets, supported by a range of marketing campaigns and direct investment in tourism-related infrastructure. This investment includes the expansion and modernisation of key sections of the...
