A slightly larger portion of outbound tourists in 2013 were travelling on excursions, when compared to 2012. According to the National Statistical Institute (NSI), however, 23% of all outbound trips were for visiting relatives. There are large communities of Bulgarian emigrants in Greece, Spain and Italy, whose relatives travel more often to visit them with recovery in the economy.

Industry Prospects

Outbound trips by Bulgarians are expected to grow by a CAGR of 1% until 2018, compared to a negative CAGR of 5% experienced over the review period. The recovery will be mainly driven by self-organising family travellers, who constitute the most important segment of outbound travellers from Bulgaria. Combined efforts of airline companies and tour operators will also contribute to the increase, but will have a less visible effect, because their services remain above the budget of a large part of Bulgarians.
