We expect a seventh consecutive year of contraction in France's construction industry in 2014, when we forecast -1.2% real growth. This represents a slight recovery from the -2.1% we saw in 2013, indicating that the worst may be over for the industry. In this context, it is our view that transport infrastructure projects will lead a return to positive construction industry growth from 2015 onwards.

Key Trends And Developments

* There have been announcements of robust investments to be made in upgrading rail infrastructure around the cities of Marseille and Nice up to 2030, with the potential for further investment in the region's network between 2030 and 2050. Transport Minister Frédéric Cuvillier has requested studies to be undertaken into a number of projects to boost the increasingly strained rail infrastructure in the south of France.
* Construction on the extension of Paris metro Line 14 started in early June 2014. This 5.8km section connects St Lazare with Mairie de Saint Ouen in the north of the capital and it is expected to carry about 40,000 passengers per hour.
* The A-335 western Strasbourg bypass was re-launched by the French Ministry of Transport. This 55-year concession involves the design, financing, construction, operation and maintenance of a 24km section of the motorway. We expect to see strong interest in this EUR475mn contract from France's main construction players - Vinci, Bouygues and Eiffage. The contract is scheduled to be signed in 2015 in order to reach completion by 2020.
* In addition, three teams have been short-listed for the A45 motorway concession in central France. As expected Vinci, Bouygues and Eiffage are the three companies competing for this project. Similar to the A-335 Strasbourg west bypass, this project was inactive for more than two years. This EUR1.3bn project involves the construction of a second carriageway, four tunnels and 11 viaducts.
* In terms of renewables, we expect about 500MW of wind...
