Consumption of hair care products continued to increase in 2013 in spite of the many limitations imposed, especially on multinationals. The young urban population, with a strong desire for modern hair care products, was the main driver of this growth. The Iranian hair care category was in the middle of a conversion process at the end of the review period, in which many consumers who used to wash their hair with simple shampoos or even bar soap discovered more sophisticated products, such as special-purpose shampoos, conditioners and 2-in-1 products. One of the major events of 2013 was the strong growth of Procter & Gamble brands, which were discontinued in 2011 and then re-launched in some cases in 2012.

Competitive Landscape

Three domestic manufacturers, Pakshoo, Kaf JSC (Darugar) and Shampoo Sedr Sehat, were the leading domestic suppliers in the Iranian hair care category, accounting value shares of 9%, 7% and 8%, respectively, in 2013. Pakshoo has two popular mass brands, Golrang and Ave, which were distributed widely throughout the country. Kaf JSC (Darugar) is an established and well-known company with more than 50 years' experience in the Iranian hair care category, and finally, Shampoo Sedr Sehat was the indisputable leader in shampoo in volume terms due its affordable unit prices, wide distribution network and strong advertising campaigns on national TV.
