Grocery Retailers in Iran - New Market Report

Iran remained a very traditional country in terms of grocery retailers in 2013, with a large number of outlets. It is estimated that there were around 300,000 grocery outlets in the country, among them independent small grocers, which was a very important channel, accounting for almost half of the number. Each grocery outlet supports a small number of households in its neighbourhood and the culture of shopping from modern grocery channels was still in its initial stages in 2013.

Competitive Landscape

Grocery retailers is a highly fragmented category. The concept of the chain is very new in Iran and most outlets are in the form of independents. In this highly fragmented environment Refah Chain Stores Co, with 165 outlets in 2013 retained the highest share. The company is the oldest chain store in Iran and is under government ownership. However, the most important company in terms of share gain was Majid Al Futtaim Hypermarkets, with its Hyperstar brand, which could become an important player, increasing its value share five-fold since 2009. The rapid growth of Hyperstar in Iran was mainly related to the low base of modern grocery retailers in the country, which resulted in huge demand. Majid Al Futtaim Hypermarkets understood this opportunity and exploited the chance by offering a wide range of products at very competitive unit prices.

Industry Prospects

With the booming trend of urbanisation, conversion from traditional channels to modern outlets is inevitable over the forecast period. It is expected that discounters will emerge by the end of the forecast period in Iran. The political situation will also play a key role in the forecast period. If US and UN sanctions against Iran loosen then multinationals will have the opportunity to target this market. However, one of the key barriers will be the traditional bazaar. Any improvement without a change in the structure of bazaars is unlikely to happen. Although the Iranian government has some reform programmes, such as a reduction in the number of independent outlets, this will not be practical with the current non-private nature of the country.
