Value growth of digestive remedies, though stable in 2013, was slower than that of OTC as a whole, as it is closer to maturity. Stressful lifestyles mean an increased likelihood of digestive problems, which ensures stable sales of digestive remedies. Medication to alleviate indigestion and stomach-related conditions are most successful when products to deal with constipation are intensely advertised. The low fibre content in the usual diet of Romanians results in a large number of people suffering from problems arising from gastric acid. This explains the higher than average growth in sales of antacids in 2013 (10% in current value terms) and of H2 blockers, sales of which grew by 11%, in current value terms.

Competitive Landscape

Domestic producers have leading positions within digestive remedies in Romania, due to the tradition of using these drugs for self-treating digestive problems and the lower prices of these products in comparison with multinational brands. Biofarm SA led with 14% of value sales 2013, with its three brands Colebil, Triferment and Anghirol (herbal). The second-placed producer was Zentiva SA which held a 9% value share in 2013, present in digestive remedies mainly with its traditional Dicarbocalm brand, which also benefits from a high level of consumer awareness and trust in Romania. Mezym manufactured by Berlin-Chemie AG Romania is also a strong brand and, together with Espumisan, enabled its manufacturer to reach an 8% value share of digestive remedies in 2013.
