Travel Accommodation in the United Kingdom - New Study Released

Travel accommodation value sales grew at a stronger rate in 2013 than in 2012, rising by 2% to GBP11 billion, compared to a rise of just 1% 2012. This performance was supported by rising average spend per night, which also rose by 1% close to GBP40, but also number of bed nights which expanded by 1%. Hotels, accounting for 28% of the total bed nights in 2013, reported the strongest growth at 2% driven by the strong performance registered by inbound tourism, which is more likely to use this type of accommodation. On the other hand, other travel accommodation, which is more reliant on domestic tourists, saw the number of bed nights remain at the same level as in 2012.

Industry Prospects

Value sales at constant 2013 prices generated by the UK travel accommodation industry are expected to remain flat over the forecast period. Overall, the economic outlook has improved but this remains a challenging area because consumers have not seen yet their purchasing power rise and thus they remain price sensitive, preferring to shop around for the best deal. The internet provides plenty of options and many consumers opt to wait to book in the hope of finding a last-minute, value-for-money deal. Moreover, GDP remains below pre-recession levels and, consequently, companies are not yet ready to return to investing in business travel, as although the situation is improving it has not yet fully recovered.
