Recent Study: Cigarettes in Croatia

Croatia has found itself in a difficult position with negative GDP rates since the beginning of the economic crisis. This has negatively affected unemployment and subsequently disposable income, which in turn has decreased demand for cigarettes. Furthermore, being part of the EU Croatia has obligations to implement excise tax according to guidelines from the EU. This process started in 2012 and in 2013 there was another hike.

Competitive Landscape

The only local cigarette manufacturer is also the category leader: TDR doo has used the situation to its advantage after the declaration of Croatian independence in 1991, when manufacturers from other parts of the former Yugoslavia were wiped off the market. The remaining two local manufacturers were soon acquired by BAT Hrvatska doo and TDR doo, driving the volume share of TDR doo to a staggering 92% at one point; however, in 2013 the company accounted for 58% of volume sales. The company's share decreased since before the beginning of the review period when international players started to penetrate the category incisively.
