Retail volume sales decreased by 6% in 2013, basically for two main reasons. On the one hand, a better enforcement of the law regarding the ban on smoking in enclosed public areas determined that some consumers decreased the frequency of smoking. In addition, higher unit prices determined that some low- and low-middle-income consumers opted to smoke fewer cigarettes per day in order to continue purchasing their favourite brands.

Competitive Landscape

In Peru, multinational British American Tobacco dominates the cigarette industry, through its two companies, local one Tabacalera Nacional (TANASA) and British American Tobacco Peru Holdings. In addition, multinational Philip Morris International participates as well in this arena. In 2013, multinational British American Tobacco remains the indisputable leader in the market with an 85% volume share, followed by Philip Morris International with a 10% volume share. It is worth noting that whilst British American Tobacco Plc mostly imports its products from Chile, Philip Morris International brings its products mostly from Argentina. These privately owned companies face no competition from government-owned counterparts.

Industry Prospects

Value sales of cigarettes are expected to decrease at a marginally positive CAGR (at constant 2013 prices) and volume sales are expected to increase at 3% CAGR in the forecast period, in line with and slightly more positive than the performance observed during the review period. Whilst during 2008-2013, the decline was explained by a more restrictive legislation and the increase on taxes paid by cigarettes, it is expected that in between 2013 and 2018 consumers will gradually smoke less due to better enforcement of the smoking in enclosed public places ban as well as rising health concerns of some social smokers who will choose to reduce their cigarette intake.
