BMI's China tourism report looks at a range of indicators for this enormous potential market, including the increasing volumes of both inbound and outbound travel, development of the hotel sector and transport infrastructure and gains in overall industry value. With no shortage of tourist attractions and a growing middle class with increasing spending power, we expect to see healthy growth across the board for tourism to and from China.

Covering over 9.7mn square kilometres, China offers a seemingly endless array of attractions. The capital Beijing is home to sites of enormous cultural and historical importance, including the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, the Imperial Gardens and Mausoleums and hundreds of temples. Across the country, China boasts 47 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, behind only Italy. These include the Great Wall, and several natural protected areas including Lushan National Park. The country's global profile received a boost from the highly successful hosting of the 2008 Olympic Games, and the country is more accessible to tourists than ever before. As such, we expect to see the number of inbound arrivals reach an impressive 43mn in 2018, up from 32mn in 2014.

As well as an increase in inbound arrivals, we are also forecasting steady growth in terms of the number of outbound travellers, from an already impressive base of 89mn in 2014 to a substantial 122mn in 2018 - one of the highest outbound travel figures in the world. This growth is predicated on domestic economic prosperity, and while China may not repeat recent years of economic boom, we are still forecasting healthy annual GDP growth throughout the forecast period. The middle class is expanding, along with rates of private financial consumption, pointing towards increased tourism spending. As well as boosting the outbound travel market, this will also drive growth in domestic tourism, which is already substantial and well established.
