According to CONSEP (the National Council of Control of Psychotropic Substances), which conducts constant surveys and investigations (with children and teenagers) to calculate the smoking prevalence amongst minors, the smoking prevalence of minors decreased from 17.7% (in 2005) to 14.4% (in 2008) to 3.1% (in 2012). The trend is expected to continue in 2013 and over the forecast period. Another reason for decreasing consumption is the stricter control in retail outlets to avoid selling to minors.

Competitive Landscape

The cigarette industry in Ecuador can be considered as a monopoly. The large leader is Phillip Morris International's subsidiary in Ecuador, Tabacalera Andina SA (or Tanasa), which accounted for a volume share of 100% in 2013. Even if there have been other large tobacco firms like British American Tobacco (South America), they have not succeeded in the country as Tanasa has been in Ecuador for many years and developed a strong loyalty to its main brands: Marlboro, Lark and Lider. So, British American Tobacco left the country over seven years ago and no other firm has been able to compete against Tanasa.

Industry Prospects

During the forecast period, the trend in 2013 towards reducing cigarette consumption amongst minors is expected to become stronger, as more controls are expected and the CILA is likely to become stronger with more local representatives. Most avid cigarette smokers started consuming since they were minors, and this developed into a habit that continued throughout their adulthood. With a smaller number of minors smoking, it is likely that during the forecast period and beyond the new upcoming adults will be less loyal and less attached to the habit of smoking cigarettes, as even if they start smoking frequently as adults it is likely that they will not develop an addiction as strong as if they were smoking since they were children or teenagers.
