The Ukrainian petrochemicals industry is in serious trouble with plants shuttered amid a deepening political and economic crisis . In light of a deepening political and economic crisis, Ukraine's petrochemicals industry is yet to see a further slowdown in growth. In H114, rubber production fell by 9.0% y-o-y while plastic production fell 10.0%. Output slumped amid the disruption of Ukraine's political crisis, which saw demand plummet and plants closed indefinitely. While June saw an uptick on a m-o-m basis, the production of rubber and plastics remains at historical lows and H214 is set to be as bad as, if not worse than, H114.

Several large-scale plants remain shut in response to the political crisis, including the fertiliser plants run by Stirol and located in the turbulent east of the country and the PVC complex operated by Karpatneftekhim in the more stable west. The Ukrainian petrochemicals industry was already facing a tough outlook with the domestic economy in recession, compounded by a weak export base and currency instability before the political crisis led to the break-away of Russian-majority regions. Russia has also threatened to decrease its supplies of natural gas to Ukraine after claiming the country owed billions in unpaid bills.

There are some moves to diversify energy sources, but it will be many years before they have a beneficial impact on the petrochemical industry. Royal Dutch Shell still plans to produce shale gas from Ukraine's Yusovsky site even as the political situation in the eastern part of the country remains unstable. Work has reached the preparatory stage, which includes a baseline environment status evaluation of the site.
