There are some 8.6 million smokers in South Korea, of which 94% are male. However, smoking prevalence is in steady decline, as is the cigarette market which has contracted by 8.4% since 2008. Per capita consumption, however, remains high at 1,806 pieces although this is almost 20% below 1990 levels. There is a large market for low tar cigarettes which account for 47% of the market and for slim cigarettes. Unusually, premium cigarettes are by far the most popular, accounting for 85.6% of sales in 2013, up from 39% in 2000.
