New Market Research Report: Tourism Flows Outbound in the Netherlands

2013 was a difficult year for outbound tourism flows in the Netherlands as demand for international travel witnessed a significant drop. The main reason for this was of course the lingering financial crisis, which had a very negative impact on consumer confidence. As many Dutch consumers were unsure about their immediate financial positions, many decided not to travel abroad, with some even deciding not to go on holiday at all. Because of their economic concerns, many Dutch consumers went on fewer trips abroad, spending less money when travelling and taking shorter trips as they were less willing to spend a significant proportion of their annual budgets on holiday and travel expenses. Consumers simply had less disposable income and this meant that they were forced to give up some luxuries in order to balance household budgets. Although outbound travel was under some pressure in the years leading up to 2013, this led to a stagnation rather than a decline in the numbers of outbound trips. 2013 was the first year that there was a significant decline in outbound departures from the Netherlands.

Industry Prospects

Over the short term, the outlook for outbound travel in the Netherlands remains negative. Initial signs indicate that Dutch consumers will still feel insecure about their personal financial futures at the end of 2014 and this means that they are likely to postpone booking expensive overseas holidays, with many likely to wait until the very last minute before deciding on a destination. When consumers postpone booking, there also will be a percentage of travellers who will decide to forget about going abroad altogether in order to balance their strained budgets. Another reason for this postponement behaviour is that consumers are confident they will get a great last minute deal if they should decide to go on a foreign trip. Some years ago, it was considered important to book early in order to get the best deals; however, today’s consumer knows that the best deals on foreign holidays throughout the year are often to be found at the very last minute and this has made travellers less predictable in general.
