Cider’s strong appeal to both men and women and its premium positioning continued to drive growth in 2013. Players within the category made concerted and focused efforts to promote their products amongst consumers, resulting in uptake amongst both men and women, particularly amongst the younger demographic, which is responding well to the aspirational positioning of products within the category.

Competitive Landscape

Distell Group continued to lead cider/perry in South Africa in 2013, accounting for an 87% share of sales in total volume terms. This share has been decreasing steadily year-on-year; declining by six percentage points from 2012. Brandhouse Beverages was the second player in the category, with a markedly smaller share of sales, at 2% in 2013; a decline of half a percentage point from 2012. The two leading players’ year-on-year decreases reflect the growing competitiveness of the category, as the relatively new but growing popularity of cider is leading new players to enter the market, who in turn are eating into the shares of established players, as opposed to building a completely new customer base.
