New Report Available: Wound Care in Switzerland

From: Fast Market Research, Inc.
Published: Mon Oct 13 2014

Demand for wound care was supported by the longer summer season in 2013, which contributed to the trend of Swiss consumers engaging in more outdoor activities, which in turn increased the chance of injury. In addition, a growing proportion of elderly people, and a consequent increased risk of home injuries, also supported demand for home wound care products. However, the value growth rate remained low in 2013. Moreover, although Swiss consumers are well known for their brand loyalty when choosing OTC products, private label wound care products are becoming more popular among Swiss consumers. The rise of private label products is also a factor limiting value sales growth.

Competitive Landscape

IVF Hartmann AG remained the leader in overall wound care in Switzerland, posting a 34% value share. The company, with its Dermaplast brand, enjoys a comfortable leadership of overall sales as it leads in the first aid kits and gauze, tape and other wound care categories, with a value share of 40% and 42% respectively. It also has a commanding value share in sticking plasters/adhesive bandages. IVF Hartmann performs well in its core business, particularly in the areas of disinfection and personal health care (first aid), partly because of the acquisition of Funny Hygiene AG in 2012.

Industry Prospects

Wound care is expected to experience stagnation during the forecast period. Consumer demand will remain low for wound care products, reflecting increased saturation. As the Swiss population ages, consumers will require wound care more frequently. However, private label is gaining share by attracting a high number of consumers. The average unit price of wound care is therefore set to decline, in turn resulting in stagnant value sales.
