Car rental in Germany continued to be a category with no notable growth opportunities, hence its flat retail value sales performance in 2012 and 2013 has to be seen as a success rather than a failure. There were no great differences in performance between business and leisure car rental on the one hand and airport and non-airport car rental on the other. Car rental insurance replacement, however, continued to decline and at the end of the review period was only responsible for 8% of total category value sales.

Industry Prospects

Over the forecast period car rental in Germany is expected to post a value CAGR decline of 1% at constant 2013 prices. Category maturity and saturation, in combination with new challenges and competition, for example from car sharing concepts, will hinder a better performance. As far as the competitive environment is concerned, the total number of car rental operators is expected to see a further decline, while company shares are expected to remain fairly stable.
