Hotels in the Netherlands began to display the first signs of genuine recovery during 2013. The first six months of the year saw hotels still struggling amidst negative consumer sentiment. This negative sentiment was particularly strong among domestic tourists, and this compromised growth in hotels during the first six months of 2013. However, during the second half of the year, some positive signs emerged as the Netherlands’ hotels reported a major increase in the number of bookings, higher occupancy rates and improvements in average room prices. Another important factor is that Dutch hotels are by no means dependent on domestic tourists and a high proportion of their guests are foreign tourists. As inbound tourism developed relatively strongly towards the end of the review period, the category recorded a major improvement during 2013.

Industry Prospects

The anticipated recovery of the Dutch economy is expected to be slow and this is set to place limits on demand for travel accommodation among domestic travellers in particular during the forecast period. The Dutch government has already announced more budget cutbacks and the Dutch housing market remains in the doldrums and these two situations are set to continue having a very negative effect on the willingness of domestic tourists to spend money on travel accommodation during the forecast period. However, there are some positive signs. For instance, the unemployment rate in the Netherlands is likely to stabilise during the forecast period and the moribund housing market is likely to see some improvement as well. These positive developments are likely to help the development of travel accommodation during the forecast period as the recent past has shown that improvements in consumer confidence in the economy can quickly translate into improvements in travel accommodation bookings among domestic travellers.
